On January 12, the Alexandria City Council approved AHC's new affordable housing project, which will be built on E. Reed Avenue and Jefferson Davis Highway. The city will loan $2.5 million to AHC and also transfer a city-owned parcel of land on Jefferson Davis Highway to AHC for the project.

The 78-unit affordable apartment complex will include one, two and three-bedroom apartments and serve families earning 60% or less of the area median income (AMI).

The project will provide underground parking for residents, a rooftop patio, onsite management, and a community space. AHC plans to coordinate with a local service provider for educational programming. The location has excellent access to public transit. Bus service is currently running in the area, and Metro and bus rapid transit is being planned for the corridor.

The building will be five stories tall on the east side, and taper down to three stories on the west. Construction is projected to take 18 months, with leasing estimated to take until the end of 2015.

The project will sit on a joined plot consisting of a city-owned parcel at 3600 Jefferson Davis Highway and six privately-owned parcels controlled by AHC. The location is across the street from the Potomac Yards shopping center.

The project is being designed by Bonstra l Haresign Architects.
