Low-Interest Loans and Grants for Renovations and Improvements

Each year AHC completes a variety of improvement projects for low- and moderate-income homeowners through low-interest loans and grants. The Home Improvement Program (HIP) is a partnership with Arlington County’s Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development.

Serving Arlington homeowners for more than 25 years, the HIP program focuses on safety and energy improvements such as windows, roofs, attic insulation, plumbing and electrical upgrades and heating systems. Elderly safety issues are another priority, including grab bars, wheelchair ramps, etc.  Larger projects are also possible, such as kitchen and bathroom renovations and additions.

Our experienced construction managers carefully monitor projects from start to finish, providing advice and support throughout the renovation process.

Accessibility and Emergency Grants


The "barrier-free" grant program helps low- and moderate-income individuals with special needs to continue living safely and independently in their own homes. This program, in cooperation with Arlington County, improves accessibility for physically challenged homeowners, by installing handrails, stair lifts and wheelchair ramps.

AHC and Arlington County also offer emergency grants for low-income homeowners and renters who have an urgent need, such as leaking roofs or heating/air conditioning problems.

Income Limits Apply - Household Size and Maximum Household Income

The HIP program includes is a very low interest rate and flexible financing depending on the household’s financial situation. Income limits apply and vary according to household size:

  • 1-person household - maximum household income = $60,240
  • 2-person household - maximum household income = $68,800
  • 3-person household - maximum household income = $77,440
  • 4-person household - maximum household income = $86,000
  • 5-person household - maximum household income = $92,880
  • 6-person household - maximum household income = $99,760
