Who is Eligible for Affordable Housing?

Households must meet certain income requirements in order to qualify for Arlington’s housing programs. Income limits vary by household size and are determined as a percentage of the Area Median Income (AMI).

In 2012, the AMI for a family of four in the Washington region is $107,500, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Most of AHC’s properties are available to families and individuals who earn 50% to 60% of the AMI. Some properties also include units for households earning 40% of AMI. Apartments are also set aside for Section 8 families whose income is lower.

In 2012, for instance, a one-person household is eligible for an affordable apartment if they earn up to $30,120 (40% of AMI) to $45,180 (60% of AMI).

A two-person household can earn up to $34,400 (40% of AMI) to $51,600 (60% of AMI).

And, a four-person family can earn between $43,000 (40% of AMI) and $64,500 (60% of AMI).
