You can make a real difference in the lives of children and teens in Arlington. A few hours of your time can change a life forever. AHC's programs work well because they are located in the communities where families live.
Enthusiastic volunteers are needed to work with elementary students in AHC's After-School Programs.
Volunteer opportunities are flexible -- from an hour to weekly -- and include reading with children, helping with homework, and supervising games and activities.
Hours are from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. — Monday, Tuesday and Thursday — and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Volunteers are a critical part of AHC's successful Teen Tutoring program. Individuals help middle and high school students with homework, and more importantly, become role models and mentors.
Volunteers are needed once a week for about an hour and a half -- from 6:00 to 7:30 or 6:30 to 8:00 pm, depending on the center.
Tutors are paired with one student throughout the school year to help youngsters and volunteers build an ongoing personal relationship. Tutors, often by sharing their own experiences, can inspire and encourage teens to do well in school and make smart long-term career, educational and life-style choices. (For this reason, we ask volunteers to commit for the entire school year.) With volunteers’ help and positive influence, this program really works. Students improve their grades, become more confident, and stay in school.
AHC's Summer Camp provides educational and fun opportunities for elementary students from July through August. In this award-winning program, volunteers work with elementary age students on academic (math and literacy) enrichment activities as well as creative activities and field trips -- all designed to help prevent summer learning loss.
Our Summer Camp operates Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to join us for an hour or the whole week. There will be chances to go on some exciting field trips all over the DC, MD and VA region.
