Who qualifies for affordable housing?
AHC primarily serves families who earn between 30% and 60% of the Area Median Income. Area Median Income, or AMI, is the middle income in a given area and is the measurement that qualifies families and individuals for affordable housing. In Arlington, for example, the 2015 median income for a family of four is $109,200. To qualify for AHC’s housing, a family of four can earn up to $65,520 (60% of AMI). Similarly, a single person can earn up to $45,900. Although HUD guidelines suggest a family should not spend more than 30 percent of its annual income for housing, that is often unrealistic for many families living in a region as expensive as the mid-Atlantic.
