The Berkeley, originally two 1960s buildings with 137 affordable apartments, is undergoing a complete redevelopment. Construction began in June 2018. The new apartment community will include 256 apartments available to households earning between 40% and 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). More than 80% of the apartments will include two or three bedrooms.
Expected to welcome families in 2020, the new community will include a playground, sport court, community center and fitness room. The Berkeley is also close to schools, public transportation and the Four Mile Run bike trail.
The Berkeley overlooks Four Mile Run, a nine-mile stream that is part of an extensive Master Plan to turn the corridor into a model of urban ecological restoration. To complement the Plan’s goal to integrate natural areas with active urban nodes, the Berkeley’s redevelopment incorporates green design with active outdoor spaces and increased access to the waterfront.
Designed to earn an EarthCraft Gold certification to reduce environmental impact, the redevelopment will include a green roof over the parking structure, reduced impervious surfaces along the stream that will reduce runoff 80%. New outdoor amenities include a widened pedestrian/bike trail to 12 feet behind the apartment community.
