The Shell is a new 83-unit affordable apartment building at the intersection of Columbia Pike and Greenbrier Street in the Columbia Heights West Neighborhood. Leasing started in early 2015.

The apartment community is built on a parcel of land that once included a Shell gas station. AHC combined undeveloped land it owned next to its Harvey Hall Apartments with the gas station’s parcel to assemble a large enough site to develop the new apartment building.

The six-story structure is built around a central courtyard with ground floor retail on Columbia Pike. The project is EarthCraft certified and also features a green roof.

The Shell contains five efficiencies, 10 one-, 63 two-, and 5 three-bedroom units. Nineteen apartments are affordable to households earning 50% Area Median Income (AMI) and 64 units are for households earning 60% AMI.

The first floor also includes a 789-square-foot community center, a management office, and 6,600 square feet of retail space. Additionally the building has a fitness room for resident use.
