AHC Inc. has been selected by Amazon as a nonprofit partner to participate in a $5 million company employee match campaign. AHC is one of 10 housing and homelessness nonprofits chosen in the Northern Virginia/Washington, DC region to receive the donations.
With brand new college t-shirts and big smiles, 20 high school seniors proudly announced where they are going to college during AHC Inc.’s recent College Signing Day. The students, participants in AHC’s College & Career Readiness Program, are all the first in their families to achieve this milestone.
As part of National Volunteer Month, AHC Inc. honored 15 individuals who have volunteered with the Arlington-based nonprofit’s education programs for five years. The April 26 celebration included special guest Tannia Talento, Vice Chair of the Arlington School Board. About 240 people volunteer each year with AHC Inc
AHC Inc., along with partners Jonathan Rose Companies and the Community Development Trust, celebrated the completion of an $8 million renovation of Lafayette Apartments, a large garden-style apartment community in Fairfax County.
AHC Inc. is delighted to welcome Ginger Brown and Terron Sims to its Board of Directors. “AHC is fortunate to have such committed community leaders serve on our Board,” said Walter D. Webdale, AHC Inc. President and CEO. “Both Ginger and Terron have extensive experience building local partnerships and advocating for affordable housing and educational opportunities.”
With sledge hammers and shovels, local leaders, community members and partners helped kick off the redevelopment of The Berkeley, an aging affordable apartment complex in Arlington, VA. Arlington-based nonprofit developer AHC Inc. is transforming the outdated property into a new affordable community with 256 apartments – almost doubling the original 137 homes. The $100 million redevelopment is expected to welcome residents in 2020.
Working together, nonprofit developer AHC Inc. and the City of Alexandria successfully transformed three acres previously owned by St. James United Methodist Church into a vibrant, mixed-use, mixed-income community with an onsite preschool operated by The Campagna Center. The site will also include 31 market-rate townhomes constructed by Craftmark. Families began moving into St. James Plaza in mid-March.
NeighborWorks America (NW) was founded 40 years ago as a grassroots approach to creating better, more affordable homes in places that need them most. AHC Inc. is proud to have been a NeighborWorks partner since 2001. Since then, we have received $13 million in assistance, which we have leveraged with public and private investment to develop more than 5,000 affordable and workforce housing units.
In early June, AHC Inc. honored 20 high school graduates. Our class of 2018’s achievements are remarkable. Perhaps most life-changing, ALL of the students are the first in their families to attend college. Together, the group earned more than $613,000 in scholarships. Many students have participated in AHC’s programs for years. Three of this year’s class has been in AHC’s education programs since Kindergarten.
AHC Inc. is delighted to announce that Wanda L. Pierce has joined its Board of Directors. Ms. Pierce has more than 25 years of successful management experience in the nonprofit and corporate sectors. Most recently, she served as the Executive Director of the Arlington Community Foundation. For a portion of her childhood, Ms. Pierce lived in affordable housing and has seen first-hand what a difference affordable housing can make.
