Volunteers are the heartbeat of AHC’s resident services initiatives and the key to our residents’ success.
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the volunteer application or email volunteer@ahcinc.org.
Volunteers are critical to our residents’ success. Whatever your experience or your time frame, we welcome your support!
Our year-round Resident Services programs provide comprehensive support for families and for students from elementary school through high school and during the summer when low-income children are particularly susceptible to learning loss. AHC’s educational programs encourage academic excellence and personal growth in a nurturing environment. Because programs are located in the communities where families live, they are a consistent part of the children’s and their families’ lives.
Weekly volunteer opportunities
AHC provides education opportunities at seven community centers in Arlington. See locations and volunteer schedules.
Afterschool
Work one-on-one or with a small group of elementary-aged students (k-5th grade) and help youth complete homework, study for tests, and also build literacy and math skills. Volunteer one day a week for an hour sometime between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, during the school year.
Teen Program
Work one-on-one with a middle and high school student (6th – 12th grade) and help teens complete homework, study for exams, and improve in challenging subject areas. Foster both academic and life skills to help teens graduate from high school and maximize their potential. Volunteer once a week for an hour, sometime between 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday through Thursday, during the school year.
College and Career Readiness
Mentors work one-on-one with a high school junior or senior as the student prepares for life after high school. Help teens write college application essays, study for standardized tests, apply for financial aid and scholarships and explore possible careers. Meeting times are flexible and arranged between volunteer and student.
Summer Camp
Designed to prevent summer learning loss, this program provides both educational and fun activities for elementary children and teens. Volunteers help with outdoor and educational activities.
Food Distributions
AHC gives out groceries and food boxes to residents at various apartment complexes. Weekly or one-time volunteers needed at properties in Arlington and Montgomery County.

COVID safety precautions
Most of AHC’s volunteer positions are in-person. The health and safety of our students, volunteers, staff & everyone’s families are critically important. AHC monitors CDC guidelines and Arlington Public School’s operations and will make changes to our programs if needed. We require that volunteers, staff and students over age 12 are vaccinated for COVID-19.
One-time or group volunteer opportunities
Special Events
We often need volunteers for just a few hours for special events or annual activities, including distributing backpacks to elementary students in the fall, helping prepare or serve Thanksgiving dinners for residents, and more.
Career Exploration
Help our middle & high school students explore career options by talking to a group of students, joining a career panel or hosting students at your office. Sign up or learn more here.
Snack bags & Gift bags
AHC gives bags of healthy snacks to students in our education programs to keep them energized while they learn and play. During the holidays and at graduation, we give gift bags with fun and useful items to our students. This a great activity for groups, families and individuals.
